Images: Iconography of Music in African-American Culture (1770s-1920s)
Music and African American studies professors Southern and Wright previously collaborated on an annotated bibliography of African-American Traditions in Song, Sermon, Tale, and Dance, 1660s-1920 (1990). Here, they reproduce 260 genre pictures of black Americans “in their own private social world,” with an emphasis on expressive culture. Their analysis blends musicology, ethnomusicology, musical iconography, and art history. Works are grouped chronologically (colonial and Federalist, antebellum, and postbellum eras) and by themes (e.g., “The African Legacy” or “The Black Preacher as an Institution”). Artists represented include familiar names like Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer as well as now forgotten figures; all but one were white Americans or Europeans. A valuable visual supplement to more traditional histories of the period. Mary Carroll, Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved.
