Book Beat July Newsletter

Dear Readers,

Thank you for your continued support.

We started the week with an AMAZING visit from “That Woman from Michigan” Gretchen Whitmer, who came by as part of a low-key book-launch planned by her publisher, staff and security detail. Her book is a fast fun read with lots of family stories, sage advise, a few scary stories, and some hilarious true confessions.True Gretch was a blast to read and offers many insights into our favorite State governor. On Tuesday, the day of the book’s official release, we sold out every copy. The publisher is sending a quick restock of her book with signed bookplates that we expect to be arriving tomorrow. If interested in a copy please give us a call or preorder online. We are super pleased seeing “Big Gretch” out there supporting indie bookstores!

We’re excited to be hosting an October book signing event for MC5: An Oral Biography of Rock’s Most Revolutionary Band with Jaan Uhelzski and Brad Tolinski. The book was based on ten years of interviews with the MC5 made by journalist and rock writer Ben Edmonds beginning in 1990. In advance of the book’s release we’ve put together an interview with author Jaan Uhelzski and Susan Whitall, and a follow up interview with Leni Sinclair. Read the illustrated interview at Jaan Uhelzski on the MC5.

Our repost this month is The Importance of Summer Reading from 2008. The post includes many helpful resources and reading lists for children and young adults.

Come support the Detroit Bookfest on July 21! We will have several tables of sale books, a table for local author signings, and a few rare books displayed at this years Detroit Book Festival. This has become one of the great community wide events that celebrates books (and records). Every year we have a great time seeing old and new customers, and visiting the great wealth of books on display by other booksellers and publishers. More details are offered below.

Read small press book reviews, author interviews, and indie recommendations from our resident bibliophile Tom Bowden in his monthly column i arrogantly recommend…

Wishing everyone a peaceful and healthy summer of great reading!
