From breadth of shadow and bliss of soul
may I present
INCIDENTS AROUND THE HOUSE
coming June 25
and may we never be asked,
“Can I go inside your heart?”
in an unrecognizable tone of voice
coming from a blurred corner
an overlooked sliver
of our comforts.
–Josh Malerman

A chilling, wholly unique tale of true horror told by the child Bela. A story about a family as haunted as their home.

To eight-year-old Bela, her family is her world. There’s Mommy, Daddo, and Grandma Ruth. But there is also Other Mommy, a malevolent entity who asks her every day: “Can I go inside your heart?”

When horrifying incidents around the house signal that Other Mommy is growing tired of asking Bela the question over and over, Bela understands that unless she says yes, her family will soon pay.

Other Mommy is getting restless, stronger, bolder. Only the bonds of family can keep Bela safe, but other incidents show cracks in her parents’ marriage.

The safety Bela relies on is about to unravel. But Other Mommy needs an answer.

Josh Malerman
is a New York Times bestselling author and one of two singer-songwriters for the rock band The High Strung. His debut novel, Bird Box, is the inspiration for the hit Netflix film of the same name. Before publishing his debut novel Bird Box with ECCO/HarperCollins, he wrote fourteen novels, never having shopped one of them.

Being the singer/songwriter of the Detroit rock bandThe High Strung, Malerman toured the country for six years, as the band played an average of 250 shows a year, and Malerman wrote many of the rough drafts for these novels in the passenger seat between cities on tour. He says this about those days: “I never saw the books with dollar signs in my eyes. It was no hobby, that’s for sure, it was the real thing and always has been, but I was happy, then, simply writing, and while I blindly assumed they’d be published one day, I had no idea how something like that occurred.”

His other novels include Bird Box, Daphne, Pearl, Goblin, House at the Bottom of the Lake, Black Mad WheelUnbury Carol, Inspection, Spin a Black Yarn, and Malorie, the sequel to Bird Box. Malerman lives in Michigan with his fiancée, the artist-musician Allison Laakko.
