The Parisian Novels (The Yellow Books), by Vincent Van Gogh, 1887

“This was my only and my constant comfort. When I think of it, the picture always rises in my mind, of a summer evening, the boys at play in the churchyard, and I sitting on my bed, reading as if for life.”
— Charles Dickens, David Copperfield

Dear Friends and Readers,

One of our favorite annual events is next weekend: SUNDAY, JULY 17 at Eastern Market in Detroit. The Detroit Festival of Books (aka: Detroit Bookfest) – a local jamboree of booklovers, bibliophiles, reading fans and bookstores. At this years  Bookfest we’ll be in booth #4 at Detroit’s Eastern Market in shed #5. We’ll be bringing sale books, modern first editions, and rarities in art, photography and children’s books.

Several local authors will be visiting our booth between 12-4 PM, exact times TBA: Harvey Ovshinsky (Scratching the Surface); Donald Levin (Savage City); Aaron Foley (Boys Come First); and Rochelle Riley (That They Lived, and The Burden). More details can be found at our post: Fifth Annual Bookfest.

Our July reading group selection is W. B. Sebald’s Rings of Saturn. If you’ve never read him before this is a great starting point. More info on the reading group can be found at Rings of Saturn July selection. A very condensed guide to world lit recommendations can be read at: Read Global, Buy Local.

Small press book reviews are featured at i arrogantly recommend… by Tom Bowden and in Small Takes by Tom Bowden.

Wishing everyone a joyous summer!

Happy readings,

~Cary, Colleen and the Book Beat staff
